2 year - 12 month paid position - approximately 10 hrs./week


The Patient Advocate is supervised by the Student Health Service Public Relations Manager and performs the following functions:

  1. Patient Relations

    1. On a quarterly basis set regular "office hours" at the Information Kiosk in the Student Health Lobby.

    2. Patient Comments and Suggestions

      1. Review all comments (written, oral and over the web) with the Student Health Director, Administrator and Public Relations Manager on an every-other week basis.
      2. Based on above meeting, follow-up on student comments where appropriate (if students leave contact information) in the following manners: a)phone; b)email or c)in person.
      3. Based on above meeting, communicate with staff members or their supervisors any comments received.
    3. Serve on at least one committee related to SHS, such as: Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), the Alcohol and Other Drug Council/Work Group or the USHIP committee.

    4. Work to promote SHS as needed (i.e. Nexus opinion articles, Santa Barbara News-Press opinion articles, etc.)

  2. Orientation (optional)

    1. Assist the Public Relations Manager in updating orientation materials.

    2. Participate in Summer Orientation under the direction of the Public Relations Manager. Mon. & Fri. afternoon and evening sessions.

      1. Student Health representative to student evening sessions. Present slide show/video to incoming class aquatinting them with services offered at Student Health.
      2. Table outside the dining commons with Public Relations Manager during the afternoon session and circulates inside the dining commons answering questions from parents and students.
    3. Fills in for the Public Relations Manager when needed.


    4. Administrative

      1. Maintain Patient Advocate files including written records of comments, findings and recommendations

      2. Maintain and update Patient Advocate Manual

      3. Update job description

      4. Assist Public Relations Manager with recruitment, selection and training.

        1. Review job application
        2. Review interview questions
        3. Organize timeline
        4. Publicize job
        5. Update website
        6. Select committee members
        7. Interview
        8. Inform candidates of interview outcomes
        9. Train successor
    5. Reports

      1. Quarterly and annual reports summarizing job accomplishments.

      2. Survey

    6. Other

      1. Special Projects (such as student election campaigns, questionnaires, committee questions, etc.)

      2. Tabling at on-campus events

      3. Act as SHS liaison to campus organizations by attending meetings of special interest groups to solicit involvement as necessary.
