How Insurance Works at SHS
How Your Insurance Works When You Visit Student Health Services
When you are enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), you will not be charged to visit a doctor or nurse in the Student Health Service. Your laboratory and xray processing fees are also waived. There may be some minimal charges, such as the cost of laboratory work which must be sent outside the health service for processing, or orthopedic supplies. Any expenses which you incur will appear on your BARC statement - you need not pay at the time of your visit.
For those services for which there is a cost, you may submit a claim for benefits to the insurance company. You have a $300 deductible per year which you must satisfy before receiving monetary benefits, but these small costs at Student Health will all go toward this deductible when you submit a claim. It is a very simple process, can be done online, and an Insurance Advisor located in the lobby of Student Health can help you with this if you need assistance.
Prescription copayments will also go directly to your BARC statement. The pharmacy is conveniently located in the lobby of Student Health.
Since Student Health is open year round (Monday - Friday except for holidays), it is easy to take advantage of the many services offered, and it is a requirment of your insurance plan that you do come to Student Health first for evaluation and you must have a referral before accessing an outside provider (unless you are 50 miles outside of Santa Barbara).
Remember: There is NO COST for a visit, so please do utilize Student Health whenever you have a medical need!
