Presentations on alcohol and other drugs are generally presented by STAR Peer Health Interns, but Michael Takahara is available as a speaker for specialized presentations.
Current Presentations:
Alcohol/Drug Values Clarification
Students examine their own values and see how alcohol and other drugs support or conflict with them. Discussion focuses on values, the alcohol biphasis response and preventing alcohol abuse from interfering with your goals and values.
Binge Drinking and Sober Reflections (video)
1 student, 16 shots in 4 hours caught on video by friends who were attempting to help him see and understand the effects of his drinking behavior. Discussion after the video centers on alcohol poisoning, blood alcohol content (BAC) factors, and how to reduce your risk for the negative effects of alcohol.
Drinking Stories(video)
Students discuss this 13 minute UCSB film about the consequences of their alcohol abuse:
DUI, injury, and acquaintance rape. Alcohol knowledge, self-monitoring, local drinking laws, and resources are the focus of this discussion.
Stimulant Pictionary
Caffeine, adderall, nicotine, cocaine and meth and all stimulants increase activity in the central nervous system. In low doses they increase energy, increase attention, raise the heart rate and blood pressure, increase respiration, and reduce appetite and thirst. In high dose there can be dangerous health effects.
Drug Jeopardy
Test your drug and alcohol knowledge while engaging in healthy competition, in this fun and interactive game show. Topics will include cocaine, GHB, tobacco, meth, MDMA, and more.
Bob Marley: The Music, The Man, The Marijuana
Bob Marley's influence in music, politics and culture can not be denied.He also used marijuana. This presentation takes a looks at how his values are reflected in his lyrics.It asks audiences to examine their own values as well. It covers marijuana basics, answers if marijuana is addictive, and describes the resources available to UCSB students.
Tobacco Family Feud
This Family Feud game looks at common beliefs about tobacco, hookah, and chew. Students learn current tobacco research, media literacy and cessation resources.
Stress Busters
Stressed? Practice quick and easy stress relievers, such as deep breathing, laughter, massage, progressive relaxation, and visualization.
