Student Health Psychiatric and Social Work Services
Whether you are an incoming freshman, or returning student, you may find some of the services that we offer helpful to you during your time at UCSB. There are many opportunities for emotional growth at a university but not everyone makes it through college without experiencing some challenges along the way. It is recommended that students seek help if these difficulties are interfering with your academic or personal well being.
UCSB Student Health psychiatry divison is made up of psychiatrists and licensed clinical social workers. The psychiatry division works together to assist students in getting their emotional needs met by assessment, treatment, and linkage with other campus and community providers/services.
Student Health psychiatrists provide evaluations, if indicated medication treatment, and supportive psychotherapy. Currently registered UCSB students (or one quarter post registerd) are elgible for services, and there is no cost for your appointments if you have SHIP insurance. A clinicial referral (MD, therapist) is needed for a SH psychiatry appointment. Fee for service psychiatry is available for students who do not have SHIP coverage.
The social worker's role is to meet with students and other involved (with student's permission) to identify the student's obstacles, needs, strengths, and goals. Together the social worker and student develop a plan to access resources needed to overcome these obstacles and support the student's strengths. Social workers serve as the main campus contact point, making referrals when it's unclear where a student should go for assistance. The ultimate goal is for students to maximize their college experience while at UCSB. Students are elgibile for these social work services at no cost.
