Nutrition services are available to all UCSB students. A student can see a dietitian for a variety of reasons including concerns about the nutritional adequacy of following a vegan or vegetarian meal plan, elevated triglycerides or cholesterol, sports nutrition, food obsessions or unhealthy eating practices. The first visit is one hour and the following visits can range from 15 to 30 minutes. Appointments may be made by calling 893-3371. Please expect to wait from one to two weeks for an appointment.

If a student is assessed as having a more complex nutrition problem, such as an eating disorder, additional treatment options will be recommended including an assessment with a medical provider and/or therapist. Students presenting with more complex issues cannot receive adequate care by electing to only see a dietitian.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Students who are returning from day treatment or residential treatment for an easting disorder should be aware that the demands of college will increase the likelihood of relapse. It is essential that students prioritize their health and recovery over their academic demands.

After an initial visit and assessment, with either our Eating Disorder Specialist, a medical provider at Student Health, or a Student Health dietitian, the student will be encouraged to meet with the other  providers specializing in Eating Disorders.  After these visits, one of three recommendations may be made:

1. Outpatient treatment on campus through a multi-disciplinary team that includes nutrition, medical, and psychotherapy services. The student regularly meets with team members.

2. Outpatient treatment that includes a referral to the Santa Barbara community for a long-term level of comprehensive care. Student Health will provide information on health care providers in the community who specialize in eating disorder treatment.

3. Residential services that require a temporary withdrawl from college.  The student is referred to various programs that offer in-patient care for severe eating disorders.
